As we acknowledge today's notable events, we encounter a remarkable intersection of beliefs and worldviews. Ramadan, a significant religious observance for Muslims around the globe, is said to mark the month in which the foundation of Islamic theology, the Quran, was revealed to the Islamic Prophet, Muhammad. From a secular standpoint, the Quran is understood as a text - often referred to as the word of “god,” an attribution to the divine god character, Allah, within Islamic theological constructs and narratives.

Throughout Ramadan, Muslims engage in fasting from dawn until sunset, dedicating themselves to prayer, reflection, and acts of charity. The cultural and social narratives propose the practice of religious fasting as aiming to cultivate self-discipline, gratitude, and empathy for those less fortunate. Many Muslims, including my friends and family members, sincerely endeavour to uphold these values during their holy month.

Simultaneously, today marks International Atheist Day, which celebrates the value of secular principles such as reason, logic, and the pursuit of knowledge through empirical evidence. As humanists and secularists, we embrace a range of values that promote individual freedom, societal justice, and ethical responsibility. These values include:

1. Human dignity and worth: every individual has inherent value, and we should treat them with compassion and empathy. Recognizing the importance of respecting each person's rights and dignity of personhood is fundamental to fostering a just society.

2. Equality: access to and equal treatment by the law and political equality must be pursued for all, regardless of race, sex, or socio-cultural affiliations such as religion, providing no harm was caused by such beliefs. By promoting equal opportunities and fighting against discrimination, we can attain more desirable social cohesion and, thus, a more harmonious world.

3. Freedom, autonomy, and the Right to Self-Determination: individuals have the right to make decisions about their own lives, free from external imposition or coercion, as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others. By advocating for self-determination, we support empowering individuals to shape their destinies and contribute to societal betterment.

4. Democracy: participatory and inclusive decision-making processes are essential for ensuring diverse voices are heard and considered. A democratic society allows individuals to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives and fosters a sense of shared responsibility.

5. Free speech, open dialogue and critical thinking: open dialogue, freedom of speech, and critical thinking are vital in promoting understanding, intellectual growth, and rational decision-making. By championing these principles, we encourage the exchange of ideas and respect for diverse perspectives, fostering a vibrant and pluralistic society.

6. Tolerance: a pluralistic society that respects diverse beliefs and opinions is essential for peaceful coexistence. By cultivating tolerance and understanding, we can reduce conflict, improve social cohesion and create a more harmonious world.

7. Environmental stewardship: Humanism acknowledges the interconnectedness of all life forms in our evolved planetary ecosystem, and our responsibility to protect the planet is crucial for our survival and the well-being of future generations. By promoting sustainable practices and environmental consciousness, we can foster a healthier and more balanced relationship with nature.

As someone who does not subscribe to religious beliefs, I do not recognize the spiritual importance of Ramadan. However, I acknowledge the deeply held convictions of Muslims who observe Ramadan and respect their right to practice their religion as long as it does not harm others. It is crucial to distinguish between critiquing religious beliefs and unfairly targeting individuals based on their faith—a differentiation often obscured by the term "Islamophobia."

Defining Islamophobia, its origins, and the role of far-right politics in exploiting it.

Islamophobia, as a term, has its origins in the late 20th century, and it broadly refers to an irrational fear, prejudice, or hatred against Islam and Muslims. The term emerged in the context of various historical events, such as the Iranian Revolution, the Rushdie Affair, and the 9/11 attacks, which fueled negative perceptions of Islam and its followers. However, the term's vagueness has led to confusion and misinterpretation, often conflating valid criticism of Islam as an ideology with prejudice against Muslims as individuals.

The Iranian Revolution in 1979 saw the establishment of an Islamic republic in Iran, replacing the secular monarchy. The revolution not only alarmed the West but also introduced a new era of Islamic political influence in the region. The Rushdie Affair, in 1989, involved the issuing of a fatwa by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini against author Salman Rushdie for his book "The Satanic Verses," which was deemed blasphemous. This event sparked global debates on freedom of speech and the perceived incompatibility of Islamic values with those of Western societies. The 9/11 attacks, carried out by Islamic extremists, heightened the sense of threat and fear from radical Islam and led to widespread negative stereotyping of Muslims in general.

The fear of the influence of Islam on society, mainly as a result of immigration, has led to concerns about the erosion of traditional values and cultural norms. For instance, the influx of Muslim immigrants in Europe has resulted in some far-right political parties exploiting fears of an "Islamization" of their countries, portraying Muslim immigrants as threats to national identity and social cohesion. The perception of regression in women's rights, such as the debate around wearing the hijab or the burqa, further fuels the narrative of Islam being incompatible with Western values (and it may be so). Additionally, the perception of a threat to national security is reinforced by instances of Islamic extremist attacks, leading to generalizations that unfairly stigmatize the Muslim community as a whole.

The rise of far-right political parties in Europe and the United States has seen the exploitation of so-called Islamophobia as a tool to gain support. Parties like France's National Front, the Netherlands' Party for Freedom, and the United States alt-right movement have used fear-mongering rhetoric to paint Muslims as a monolithic threat to Western society, capitalizing on the so-called Islamophobic sentiments to garner votes.

While it's essential to recognize the legitimate concerns surrounding certain aspects of Islamic theology or practices, it's crucial to differentiate these critiques from the unfair treatment and demonization of Muslims as a whole. By understanding the nuances between criticizing ideas and marginalizing individuals, we can challenge harmful narratives while promoting empathy and respect for those who hold different beliefs or cultural practices.

Defining anti-Muslim bigotry and why it's a more accurate term

Anti-Muslim bigotry, on the other hand, addresses explicitly the prejudice and discrimination directed against Muslim individuals, separate from the criticism of the Islamic religion itself. Examples of anti-Muslim bigotry include hate crimes, racial profiling, workplace discrimination, verbal harassment, and travel bans targeting Muslim-majority countries. This term is more accurate and helpful, as it focuses on the unfair treatment of people rather than the criticism of an ideology, allowing for a clearer understanding of the challenges Muslim communities face.

The history of anti-Muslim bigotry dates back centuries, but it has evolved over time to take on different forms, often influenced by political and social contexts. In recent decades, anti-Muslim bigotry has been exacerbated by events such as the 9/11 attacks and the rise of extremist groups like ISIS, leading to increased suspicion and hostility towards Muslims in many parts of the world. This prejudice is perpetuated through various channels, including mainstream media, social media, and political rhetoric, which often portrays Muslims as a monolithic and threatening group.

Combating anti-Muslim bigotry requires a multi-faceted approach, including education, interfaith dialogue, and challenging harmful stereotypes and misconceptions about Muslims and their faith. By promoting empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity, we can create a more inclusive and tolerant society that rejects discrimination based on religion or ethnicity.

Addressing Ex-Muslim experiences and encouraging liberal voices amidst violence in Islamic communities

It is crucial to acknowledge the experiences of ex-Muslims who have left Islam due to their experiences and grievances with the religion's theology or practices. As an ex-Muslim and a stateless refugee myself, I can attest to the unique challenges that these individuals may face, such as ostracism, discrimination, or even violence from their former communities. By recognizing and validating our experiences, we can foster a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse issues related to Islam and Muslim communities.

Ex-Muslims often have firsthand experience with the complexities of religiously motivated violence, discriminatory practices, and other aspects of Islamic theology that they find problematic. For instance, the rise of extremist groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS, as well as the violence between Muslims and Buddhists in Sri Lanka, and the tensions between Muslims and Hindus in India, all have roots in interpretations of Islamic theology. 

Muslim-on-Muslim violence is another pressing issue that has caused immense suffering and loss within the Muslim community. This violence often stems from disagreements over interpretations of Islam and what can be deemed as the more accurate version of the faith versus what may be considered as not. Those who carry out violence usually try to enforce a rigid theological foundation of Islam onto the populations they are in or govern over. On the other hand, Muslims who have moved on from a rigid and literal application of the theological materials and embraced modernity, our evolving human rights values, and social cohesion over disunity and chaos are often on the receiving end of backlashes from violent extremists.

It is essential to address this issue not only to reduce the suffering caused by such violence but also to empower the liberal voices within the Muslim community who are interpreting the faith in a way that aligns with modern values. By supporting these individuals, we can help evolve religious beliefs to be more in line with our current understanding of human rights, ways to achieve social cohesion, and a peaceful coexistence with people of different faiths and cultural backgrounds.

To empower the liberal voices within the Muslim community, we can:

1. Encourage open dialogue and debates within the Muslim community about the diverse interpretations of Islam, promoting an atmosphere where individuals can express their opinions without fear of retribution.

2. Support organizations and initiatives that advocate for human rights, social cohesion, and peaceful coexistence within the Muslim community, providing resources and platforms for liberal voices to share their ideas and experiences.

3. Promote education and awareness about the diversity of thought among the Islamic community, history, and practice, fostering an understanding of the rich tapestry of perspectives within the Muslim community.

4. Celebrate and amplify the voices of Muslims who actively work to reinterpret Islamic theology in ways that promote peace, human rights, and social cohesion, providing role models and inspiration for others.

By recognizing and addressing the issue of Muslim-on-Muslim violence and empowering liberal voices within the Muslim community, we can contribute to a more inclusive, tolerant, and peaceful future for Muslims and people of all faiths.

As I discuss these topics, it's crucial for me to approach them with sensitivity and respect, recognizing that they may involve personal trauma or loss for others, in addition to being deeply held personal beliefs that people shape their entire lives upon. I have gone through similar experiences and understand these issues profoundly. I can address them by focusing on the specific actions and beliefs of individuals or groups rather than attributing them to the entire community of adherents of the faith. Coming from a worldview rooted in science, logic, reason, and humanism, I believe it is valid to scrutinize any belief system, including established religions like Islam or any other ideology for that matter, that present scientifically unfounded explanations about the nature of life, the universe, or human civilization. Moreover, it is essential to recognize that the ideological foundations these belief systems are based on can cause actual harm and suffering to many people.

It is important to recognize that while Islamic theology contains scriptures that emphasize the unchanging nature of the word of God, many Muslims have adapted their practices and beliefs to align with modern values, human rights, and social cohesion. This divergence between the literal interpretation of religious texts and the lived experiences of individuals is also evident in other religions, such as Christianity and Judaism.

It is important to recognize that the majority of Muslims are peaceful individuals who do not support or engage in violent acts. By acknowledging the diversity of opinions, experiences, and interpretations within the Muslim and ex-Muslim communities, we can create a balanced discussion that respects the nuances of the situation. Focusing on specific actions and beliefs of individuals or groups perpetrating violence, rather than attributing them to the entire Muslim community, allows us to address the root causes and work towards creating a more inclusive and just society. This approach promotes understanding, tolerance, and cooperation while maintaining critical scrutiny of theological foundations and fostering a respectful and inclusive conversation.

By treating Muslims with the exact expectations as everyone else, we can create an environment where meaningful discussions about challenges and criticisms can occur.

By differentiating between the critique of an ideology and the unfair treatment of individuals, we can foster more nuanced and respectful conversations about religion, culture, and human rights. For example, acknowledging the diversity of opinions and practices within the Muslim community can help to dispel harmful stereotypes and facilitate dialogue on shared values and common ground. This approach also encourages critical thinking and open-mindedness, allowing for constructive debates on controversial issues without resorting to bigotry or intolerance.

These efforts should be guided by the principles of social cohesion, individual freedom, and personal autonomy, avoiding the use of control and violence.

By learning about the beliefs and practices of different faiths, individuals can develop empathy and respect for those with different backgrounds.

By actively working to foster understanding and tolerance, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious global society wherein people of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds can coexist and thrive.

The impact of incorrect labelling and its consequences for vulnerable populations

Conflating Islamophobia with anti-Muslim bigotry can have several negative consequences, not only for Muslims living in Western democracies but, more importantly, for those who have experienced violence, discrimination, and persecution in majority-Islamic communities.

Understanding the potential pitfalls of using these terms interchangeably can help us better address the challenges faced by victims of religiously and theologically motivated violence and foster a more inclusive and empathetic discourse.

1. Silencing the experiences of victims: When Islamophobia and anti-Muslim bigotry are conflated, it can become difficult to differentiate between legitimate concerns or critiques of Islamic ideology and irrational prejudice against Muslims as individuals. This conflation can lead to the silencing of victims who have suffered due to religiously motivated violence or persecution, dismissing their experiences and further marginalizing them.

2. This ensures that discussions remain focused on the issues at hand and that participants can better understand one another's perspectives.

Logical fallacies are reasoning errors that can undermine an argument's logic. Some common fallacies to avoid include:

1. Ad hominem attacks: Attacking the person making the argument rather than addressing the argument itself.

2. Straw man fallacy: Misrepresenting someone's argument to make it easier to attack.

3. False dilemma: Presenting two opposing options as the only choices when, in fact, other alternatives exist.

4. Appeal to authority: Using the opinion of an authority figure as evidence, even when the authority figure may not be an expert in the relevant field.

5. Hasty generalizations: Drawing conclusions based on insufficient evidence or an unrepresentative sample.

6. Avoid false dichotomies: Recognize that complex issues often have more than two possible solutions or perspectives.

7. Be aware of confirmation bias: Seek out and consider evidence contradicting your preexisting beliefs or opinions.

2. Respect: Treating others with courtesy and consideration, even when disagreeing with their opinions or beliefs.

3. Humility: Recognizing that one's own perspective may be limited and being open to learning from others.

4. Empathy: Putting oneself in another's shoes and trying to understand their feelings, experiences, and perspectives.

5. Civility: Engaging in polite and respectful behaviour, refraining from personal attacks or inflammatory language.

6. Open-mindedness: Being willing to consider new ideas, perspectives, and evidence, even if they challenge one's own beliefs.

By adhering to these principles, participants can create an environment where meaningful discussions can take place, leading to greater understanding and more effective solutions to the challenges faced by Muslim communities and those affected by religiously motivated violence.

I believe that change cannot come without ownership of the issues we are trying to change. Change cannot come by sweeping difficult conversations under the rug and wishing they would go away. Change is an active practice that we must all engage in mindfully. Change happens when hearts and minds transform, and such transformation can only occur through introspection. Dialogue and honest discourse are at the heart of all human introspection.

As we move forward, it is crucial that we embrace empathy and open-mindedness in our discussions. We must be willing to listen and learn from each other's experiences, even when it's uncomfortable or challenging. By seeking common ground and understanding, we can work to break down barriers and foster a more inclusive society.

Let us not forget the power of individual action in bringing about change. Each one of us has a role to play in promoting understanding, challenging stereotypes, and advocating for justice. This tweet sparked the inspiration for this blog post. Instead of crafting a brief response on Twitter, I've chosen to delve into a more comprehensive exploration of this complex question. So let’s get on with it, shall we? Read on.

The Fundamental Issue with Religious Doctrine

At the outset, it's essential to challenge the widely accepted "concept of blasphemy." This term is often perceived as something concrete, yet it is anything but. Blasphemy is a construct, a tool wielded by religious entities—essentially highly organized cults—that base their authority on narratives lacking empirical foundation, often steeped in delusional and magical thinking. The primary function of this concept is to suppress any form of dissent against these religious ideologies.

This leads us to question the necessity of critiquing these beliefs. Excluding the aspect of personal belief or disbelief (which should inherently be a matter of individual choice), the critique becomes crucial when these religious groups leverage their doctrines to shape laws and policies. These policies, once legislated, impact every individual within that jurisdiction, enforced through the full weight of the state's machinery - from the military to law enforcement, judicial systems, and even execution. Such imposition results in widespread harm and human suffering, contradicting the tenets of humanism.

Moreover, the problem doesn't stop at state-level enforcement. We also witness vigilantism, where individuals or mobs take it upon themselves to enforce these religious edicts. This often leads to violence, loss of life, and severe infringement of human rights. Here, one cannot help but reflect on the actions of groups like Al Qaida, ISIS, Taliban, Boko Haram, and similar entities, as well as others motivated by religious nationalism, such as certain Hindutva factions. To remain silent in the face of such violence is antithetical to humanist values.

But the tentacles of religious dogma extend further, infiltrating family and community dynamics. Under the guise of maintaining 'social norms' and 'cultural values,' these groups perpetrate acts of violence such as acid attacks, honour killings, and social ostracization. These actions not only cause immediate physical harm but also lead to long-term psychological trauma, mental health issues, and, in extreme cases, suicide. The failure to speak out against such atrocities, especially in an era marked by global connectivity and a sophisticated understanding of human rights, is a betrayal of humanist principles.

As humanists, we have a duty to uphold and advance the progress made in human rights globally. Our silence in the face of religious encroachment on civil liberties is a step backward. We must actively engage in preserving these hard-won rights for future generations, ensuring that they inherit a world where human rights are not just protected but are continually advanced. This commitment to progress is not just a choice; it's an ethical imperative for anyone who subscribes to humanist values.

The Crucial Role of Blasphemy in Questioning and Progress

Understanding the importance of blasphemy in contemporary discourse requires recognizing its varied interpretations. What one individual or group deems blasphemous could be perceived by another as a mere expression of curiosity or a quest for understanding. This delineation is not always black and white; often, it exists in a complex spectrum of grey. Criticisms of human rights violations, or even participating in political discussions surrounding these issues, can be labelled as blasphemous depending on the religious context and the perspectives of those in power. This variability in interpretation is a crucial aspect of why blasphemy is significant.

Blasphemy, in its most fundamental sense, challenges the established norms and doctrines of religious entities. In doing so, it becomes a tool for scrutinizing and questioning the status quo. This is especially relevant when religious teachings and practices lead to direct human rights violations under the guise of preserving religious freedom and protecting the dominance of a particular belief system. The existence of blasphemy laws is a testament to this conflict, where the protection of religious sentiments often trumps the preservation of basic human rights and freedoms. Such laws are inherently susceptible to abuse, particularly by those who wield power, and they often serve as instruments for suppressing dissent and controlling narratives.

Moreover, the concept of blasphemy is pivotal in the context of humanism. At its core, humanism advocates for a world where human rights, ethical reasoning, and equality stand at the forefront. Blasphemy, in challenging religious dogmas that often contradict these values, becomes an essential expression in the humanist toolkit. It is not just about rejecting or mocking religious beliefs; it is about asserting the right to question, to think critically, and to hold all forms of authority—including religious ones—accountable.

In societies where religious ideologies heavily influence or even dictate state policies, the role of blasphemy becomes even more pronounced. It acts as a beacon for those who seek to promote secularism, rationality, and a world where laws and policies are made based on human welfare and ethical considerations, rather than religious doctrine. The act of blasphemy, therefore, transcends mere criticism of religion; it becomes a statement in favor of a more equitable, rational, and humane world.

Because of these reasons, blasphemy is not merely a rebellious act against religious norms; it is a profound statement in support of human rights, a call for rational discourse, and a step towards a more humanist society. Its significance lies in its ability to provoke thought, challenge unjust practices, and inspire change in pursuit of a world where human rights are not just an ideal, but a reality for all.

Confronting Religious Hostility: A Humanist Perspective

One might question the rationale behind direct confrontation with the deeply ingrained beliefs of many. Should this challenge not be equally directed at both secular and religious ideologies? Before I address this query, let's focus on the context of Islam, especially given its profound impact on societal norms in places like the Maldives and elsewhere, such as the Middle East. This reflection is vital, as Islam, the faith we are predominantly exposed to here, encapsulates a narrative that merits scrutiny.

The above image vividly encapsulates the extensive list of pejoratives that Islam, through its sacred texts, ascribes to non-believers. This nomenclature institutionalizes a form of hostility towards a significant portion of humanity.

Consider the demographics: Islam is followed by approximately 24% of the global population. This statistic leaves a staggering 76% classified under the broad term 'unbelievers,' encompassing a diverse tapestry of faiths and philosophies, including secular worldviews. The significance of this delineation lies in its universal application within Islamic theology, which does not recognize the nuanced differences among those who do not adhere to its creed. Instead, it collectively dismisses them, often during early education in madrasas and schools, teaching that such 'unbelievers' are destined for eternal damnation. This pedagogy systematically devalues the humanity of the majority of the world's population.

How can this minority viewpoint, harboured by only 24%, be deemed acceptable? While the notion of an eternal hellfire is a theological construct I reject, the intent behind such teachings is clear: if you are not a follower of Islam, your existence is devalued. This perspective leaves little room for genuine mutual respect or recognition of shared humanity. Any deviation from this stance often appears as nothing more than a strategic facade, tailored to the political zeitgeist rather than a sincere acknowledgment of equality.

It is within this framework of dehumanization that we find the genesis of countless human rights abuses attributed to Islamic doctrine. The acts of violence executed by extremist groups are not aberrations but the logical consequence of an ideology that systematically devalues 'the other.' To argue that this interpretation is incorrect is to overlook the palpable influence of such indoctrination on the actions of its adherents.

I do not claim that all Muslims will engage in acts of violence. However, there is a significant number – in the millions – who, emboldened by their interpretation of Islamic teachings, take it upon themselves to enforce these doctrines. This phenomenon is not an anomaly; it is a recurring pattern that we must acknowledge and confront as a global society.

Addressing this issue is not an assault on personal faith but a defence of our shared humanity. It is a call to action for humanists and all who value human rights to challenge ideologies that propagate hate and justify violence. By doing so, we affirm our commitment to a world that respects and upholds the dignity of every individual, regardless of their beliefs.

Strategic Blasphemy: A Proactive Stance on Existential Threats

The collective impact of religious dogmatism poses a tangible existential threat to many of us. Faced with this reality, the question arises: should we adopt a pacifist stance? My unequivocal response is a resolute no. Passivity in the shadow of aggression is tantamount to surrender. I value my singular existence and the lives of others far too greatly to submit to doctrines that diminish our shared humanity. In this transient life, we find ourselves navigating a universe indifferent to our plights and delights. Purpose and meaning, while not intrinsic to the cosmos, are the essence of the human experience. It is within our capacity, as sentient beings, to cultivate joy, foster wellbeing, and alleviate suffering.

Given my personal journey and the atrocities I have borne witness to, the notion of a slow, undefined path toward change is no longer tenable. Transformation begins with a direct challenge to the ideologies that necessitate it. Societal shifts occur when individuals evolve, and the Overton Window—the range of policies politically acceptable to the mainstream population at a given time—does not move without this collective change in mindset. People evolve through introspection, which is often sparked by challenging conversations about their core beliefs. It is imperative that we, especially those of us who are safe from violence and persecution, engage directly and robustly in these difficult but necessary dialogues. It is through such engagement that we can hope to reach a consensus and foster change.

Blasphemy, in this context, is more than just an act of defiance; it is a strategic catalyst for progress. The ultimate goal of our dissent is to achieve secularism within governance, to extract religious influence from the levers of state power. By disentangling religion from public policy, we strive to ensure that the state serves all its citizens, not just those of a particular faith. The mission is clear: to secure a societal framework where religion does not dictate the quality or direction of our collective lives. It is through strategic blasphemy that we pave the way for a society founded on secular, humanist principles—one that upholds the autonomy and dignity of every individual.

The Sacred City presents compelling evidence that suggests the holy city of Mecca is in the wrong location and that the worlds 1.6 billion Muslims are praying in the direction of the wrong city. Compiling evidence from both historical sources and new technologies point to the correct location in this seismic, revelatory new film.

In this startling and original documentary, writer and historian, Dan Gibson, shows that descriptions of Mohamed’s original holy city – as detailed in the Qur’an and Islamic histories, do not match that of the Mecca we know today.  If true, this could shake Islam to its roots, because every Muslim is required to pray towards the ‘forbidden gathering place.’ If Dan Gibson is right, Muslims are praying in the wrong direction.

In the film ‘The Sacred City’ we set out his evidence from within Islamic and ancient histories – while also using modern technologies –  to track down the biggest secret of the last fifteen hundred years. Gibson not only finds the location of the original Mecca but also provides a convincing argument as to how such a significant misunderstanding in Islamic history came about.

While clearly controversial, The Sacred City is respectful of Islam’s prophet, and does not dispute the events of the Qur’an; but shows how a deliberate attempt was made to hide from Islam, secrets that impact every Muslim today. The evidence is compelling and fascinating.

In a time when the world agenda is being set by Islam, it is more important than ever for the origins and history of this world religion to be examined anew. This is an important documentary with a world-wide appeal for both religious and secular audiences.

Beautifully filmed in the ruins and deserts of the middle east, the film is a detective story that investigates the dawn of Islam and will become the most talked-about film for years to come.
