Intolerance of actions that directly harm others (such as violence or discrimination) is necessary to protect the rights and dignity of all people. However, when intolerance is applied to speech—particularly speech that is merely offensive or provocative—it becomes a tool of oppression rather than a defence of justice.

To effectively combat intolerance, humanists must resist the temptation to simply silence those with whom they disagree. Instead, we must engage with these viewpoints, expose their flaws, and counter them with reasoned arguments and evidence. This approach not only upholds the principles of free speech but also strengthens society’s ability to deal with complex and controversial issues in a mature and constructive manner.

The New Intolerance, with its focus on protecting people from offensive speech, risks creating a society that is less resilient, open, and capable of handling the challenges of a diverse and pluralistic world. For the global humanist philosophy movement, this is a critical issue. We must advocate for a society robust enough to tolerate dissent, criticism, and even offence. Only by doing so can we ensure that the ideals of humanism—freedom, reason, and compassion—continue to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

Understanding the Paradox of Tolerance with Karl Popper

Imagine we’re telling a story to children about how to keep a playground safe and fun for everyone. This playground is big, with lots of different kids who have different ideas about how to play. Some kids want to play tag, some want to build sandcastles, and others just want to sit and talk. To make sure everyone gets along, there’s a rule: “Everyone should be tolerant of each other’s games.” That means no one should stop others from playing the way they want, as long as everyone is being kind and fair.

But then, something tricky happens. A group of kids shows up, and they don’t want to play nicely with others. They want to make new rules, rules that say, “Only our games are allowed, and anyone who plays differently is wrong.” These kids are not being tolerant at all. Now, the other kids have a big decision to make. Should they allow this group to keep playing, even though they want to take over the whole playground? Or should they tell them “No, we can’t let you do that, because you’re not being fair to everyone else.”

This is where Karl Popper’s “Paradox of Tolerance” comes into play. The paradox says that if we are too tolerant—even tolerant of those who are intolerant—then the playground (or society) could become a place where tolerance disappears entirely. If the kids let the mean group take over, soon no one else will be able to play the way they like, and the playground won’t be fun for anyone anymore.

These four comics illustrate this idea in different ways. I apologize for repeating the same theme, but in today's society, the persistence of this phenomenon compels me to share all four and walk you through them in detail. Some of us may need the explicit breakdown to fully grasp the nuances at play.

The Nazi Comic: Here, we see what happens when tolerance is extended to Nazis, who demand that their hateful ideas be respected. If allowed, they would destroy the very freedom that lets everyone else play in peace. The answer must be “No, we cannot tolerate your intolerance.”

The Islamism Comic: In this version, the intolerance comes from those who claim that their beliefs should be above criticism. If society bends to this demand, it creates an environment where only one viewpoint is allowed, which can lead to the suppression of all other voices. Again, the message is clear: “Tolerance cannot extend to those who wish to destroy it.”

The Cultural Marxism Comic: This comic shows how even ideas that start with good intentions—like wanting to make things fair—can become oppressive when taken to extremes. The intolerance of differing opinions under such regimes shows why it’s important to stand firm against any movement that demands total control over how people think or live. The message is clear: “Tolerance cannot extend to those who seek to impose uniformity and suppress diverse voices.”

The Communism Comic: This comic illustrates how ideologies that start with promises of equality and justice can spiral into systems of control that suppress dissent and enforce conformity. Under such regimes, the desire to create a fair society can lead to the eradication of individual freedoms and the enforcement of a single, oppressive worldview. The lesson here is that "Tolerance cannot be granted to those who seek to eliminate the diversity of thought and enforce their ideology as the only acceptable way of life." It's a powerful reminder that even well-intentioned movements can become authoritarian when they refuse to tolerate differing opinions and the natural plurality of human expression.

Teaching this paradox to children, or even to ourselves, reminds us that while it’s important to be kind and open-minded, we must also recognize when someone’s actions or ideas are so harmful that they threaten the very principle of tolerance. Popper’s paradox isn’t about being mean or unfair; it’s about protecting the freedom and fairness of the playground so that everyone can enjoy it, not just a few who want to make all the rules.

So, when we talk about “intolerance of intolerance,” we’re not saying we should be mean to people who disagree with us. We’re saying that to keep the playground fun and safe for everyone, we sometimes have to stand up and say “No, we won’t let you ruin this for others.” That’s how we defend the true spirit of tolerance and ensure that the playground remains a place where everyone is welcome.

Critique of the "Outrage Industry"

The Outrage Industry, in its pursuit of short-term gains, undermines the very foundations of a free and open society.

Moreover, the Outrage Industry fosters a culture of conformity, where the pressure to align with the dominant narrative stifles diversity of thought. The volatile situation in Palestine, as Israel extends its military excursions and violence over disputed territories, is claimed in hushed circles as part of their promised land narrative of what is known as the “Greater Israel” project, which encompasses territories from neighbouring countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, and threatens to ignite the entire Middle East.

Meanwhile, escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, exacerbated by the United States' commitment to defending Taiwan for its critical semiconductor industry, are pushing the world towards a precarious edge.

Some see the Jewish interest in the Heavenly Jerusalem project as a driving force behind broader geopolitical strategies, particularly within Russian circles. Russians believe that this interest, with NATO's assistance, aims to dismantle Russia and divide its vast natural resources as spoils of war. NATO, on the other hand, frames this situation as a slippery slope, suggesting that if Russia is not stopped in Ukraine, it will continue its expansion into Poland, Hungary, and beyond, evoking fears of a Hitleresque expansion threat.

Vladimir Putin has attributed the Bolshevik Revolution to Jewish undertakings, which he claims resulted in the deaths of millions of Christians. Similarly, the current geopolitical landscape suggests we may already be entrenched in a global conflict akin to a world war, characterized by economic warfare, technological espionage, and regional skirmishes. The glamorization of military might, as depicted in the RIMPAC 2024 video, seems designed to recruit the next generation for a war effort that is far from defensive.

The narrative presented in the video glorifies the spectacle of military power, portraying it as both thrilling and necessary. This portrayal is deeply unsettling, as it ignores the catastrophic consequences of such conflicts. The emphasis on technological prowess and military readiness overshadows the human cost of war. This glamorization is likely a strategic move to ensure future recruitment, as acknowledging the true horrors of war would deter young people from enlisting.

We must appeal for reason and rationality in these troubled times. Our target audience, humanist activists, can play a crucial role in fostering dialogue and promoting an anti-war message. The current path is a slippery slope leading towards World War III, a conflict that will undoubtedly have devastating consequences for humanity.

The United States' post-World War II belligerence, marked by monetary colonialism through the petrodollar standard, is facing a reckoning. Growing debt, the threat of hyperinflation, and the rise of BRICS and Bitcoin as alternatives to the world reserve currency signal the collapse of the "rules-based international order" and USD global reserve standard at the same time. Other countries are increasingly unwilling to follow these outdated rules and are seeking to chart their own courses.

As humanists, it is our duty to advocate for peace and reason. We only take the side of humanity and do not take sides in conflicts of self-interest that undermine collective humanist goals. Since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020, the world has experienced an unprecedented psychological fear campaign. While a majority of individuals felt compelled to get vaccinated with an experimental new vaccine due to concerns about COVID-19 or the fear of losing their jobs, a significant number of people chose not to comply, despite facing discrimination, persecution, and even the loss of their livelihoods.

Those who refused to get bullied by mandates have shown tremendous resilience in the face of societal pressure and adversity. They have remained stubbornly steadfast in their decision, refusing to succumb to fear or coercion. Despite being subjected to a relentless campaign that sought to label them as outcasts and threats to public health, these individuals held their ground, defending their right to make informed choices about their own bodies and health. Body autonomy matters at all times.

The resistance of this particular segment of the population has played a crucial role in safeguarding individual freedom and autonomy. By standing up against forced medical procedures and discriminatory practices, they have helped to preserve the fundamental principles of personal liberty that our societies are built upon. Their refusal to comply with mandates that infringed upon their rights has acted as a reminder to the world that individual sovereignty should never be compromised, even in the face of a global crisis.

It is important to reflect on the progress we have made since the early days of the pandemic. The unvaccinated individuals, by refusing to be "othered" and dehumanized, may have prevented the erosion of civil liberties and the descent into excessive tyranny. Their resistance served as a check against the potential overreach of governments and institutions, ensuring a balance between public health concerns and the preservation of individual rights.

While many have shown resilience in the face of societal pressure, we must now acknowledge the concerns that arose from reports of post-vaccination deaths. Unequivocally, recent data suggests that the death toll from the COVID-19 vaccine is higher than any other vaccine in the last 20 years combined - proving that the hesitantly shown by the unvaccinated was justified. However, one may argue that causation isn't a correlation, but unless someone can provide a clear answer explaining the excess death of the last couple of years, logic dictates that where there is smoke, there is a fire. As the number of deaths and side effects grew, health authorities have been forced to recognize the side effects or establish a relationship between deaths and the vaccine. These revelations underscore the importance of transparency, open dialogue, and the right to informed consent. It's crucial that individuals have access to unbiased information, allowing them to make informed decisions about their health.

The unvaccinated population's emphasis on informed consent stands out as a significant contribution. By advocating for the right to make informed decisions about medical interventions, they challenged the notion of blind compliance against all odds and paid dearly for their choices. Their insistence on transparency, open dialogue, and access to unbiased information has encouraged a deeper understanding of the risks and benefits associated with vaccinations, fostering a more informed and responsible approach to public health.

As someone who, under societal pressure, received both doses of a vaccine with no historical data to vouch for its safety and efficacy, and initially supported lockdowns due to the fear of the unknown and alarming reports and optics coming from China, I offer this perspective. I hold a steadfast belief that future chronicles of history will resonate with this account.

I’d like to invite you to watch these videos, as a reminder of how close we came to losing the very foundation of liberal democracy that modern civilization is built on.

The reality of the situation we faced can only be appreciated in once you take a step back and try to look at the events of the last few years objectively.

A totalitarian future may not be intentionally planned, but it can emerge if we fail to be mindful of the evolution of politics when we give weight to everyone's concerns, anxieties, and fears.

It is on us to remain alert and watchful for any subtle indications that our freedoms may be eroding. While the term "midwit" may seem derogatory, the meme is generally received as lighthearted and comical. In meme culture, it's more of a friendly, albeit cheeky, nudge rather than a hard push. It's all in good fun, really, often used to spotlight the quirks and habits of those with average intelligence, such as their tendency to overestimate their abilities or fall prey to common biases.

International Women's Day is celebrated globally on March 8th every year to recognize women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The day also serves as a call to action for equality and the empowerment of women worldwide. Each year, International Women's Day is celebrated with a theme. This year's theme is "Choose to Challenge," which encourages us to challenge gender bias and inequality while celebrating women's achievements and working towards creating a more inclusive world.

As a man who supports feminism and the advancement of women's rights, I believe that one of the most important ways to support women is to amplify their voices. That's why, in honour of International Women's Day, I would like to highlight some remarkable women and change movements from different parts of the world who are working tirelessly to advance women's rights. These women are community leaders who make a difference through activism and advocacy. They have a unique understanding of the challenges facing women today, and they are fighting tirelessly to address them.

All too often, well-meaning men inject their own male perspectives into women's issues when in reality, all we have to do is listen to women, help them reach an audience, let them define the issues they want to advocate for, and help them when asked for. Supporting and amplifying voices like theirs is my small act of feminism. The experience of being a woman in a patriarchal world and the legal, social, and sex-based challenges could only truly be understood by those who live it. By highlighting the stories of these remarkable women, I hope to inspire and empower readers to take action toward equality and women's empowerment.

Yasmine Mohammed

My dear friend Yasmine Mohammed comes to mind first as we celebrate the courage and resilience of women worldwide who fight for equality and women's rights. She is a Canadian anti-Islamism activist, author, and founder of the nonprofit organization Free Hearts Free Minds.

Yasmine's journey to activism began in her childhood, growing up in a strict, fundamentalist Muslim household in Canada. Forced to wear a niqab at the age of nine, Yasmine experienced firsthand the oppressive cultural practices that limit women's freedom and autonomy. As a teenager, she was forced into a violent marriage with a man who turned out to be an Al-Qaeda operative. After escaping this abusive marriage, Yasmine went on to become an advocate for women's rights through her nonprofit organization, Free Hearts Free Minds.

Today, Yasmine is a fierce advocate for women living under Islam across the world. Her experiences have shaped her views and led her to speak out against oppressive cultural practices and advocate for women's rights. She is also a professor and married to a non-Muslim man.

Through her organization, Free Hearts Free Minds, Yasmine provides support to ex-Muslims and members of the LGBT community who are at risk of persecution or execution for their beliefs or identity. Leaving Islam is punishable by death in 12 Muslim-majority countries, and Yasmine's organization offers psychological support and raises awareness about the issues facing ex-Muslims and members of the LGBT community in these countries.

One of Yasmine's most powerful tools in promoting women's rights is her podcast, "Forgotten Feminists." The podcast features conversations with inspirational women from restrictive religious backgrounds who have fought and overcome oppression. Some of the women featured on the podcast include Malala Yousufzai and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. By sharing these women's stories, Yasmine provides a platform for them to share their experiences and inspire others to speak out against injustice. It's a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of women fighting for their freedom and right to live without oppression.

In addition to her podcast, Yasmine has written a book titled "Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam." The book tells the story of how Yasmine dealt with the conflict of being born in the Western world yet raised in a fundamentalist Islamic home. It also discusses the public debate about Islam since September 11th, 2001, and how it has become polarized.

On a day like this, let's celebrate Yasmine Mohammed and the many other women around the world fighting for equality and women's rights. Yasmine's work as an anti-Islamism activist is crucial in promoting women's rights and challenging oppressive cultural practices. She is a shining example of how one person can make a difference and inspire change.

Aurat March: Women's March

Pakistan's women's rights movement has a storied history, dating back to the late 1970s when the country was under the military dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq. Under his oppressive regime, women were stripped of their fundamental human rights, prompting women activists to campaign tirelessly for their rights and refuse to back down until Zia's rule ended with his death in 1988. Despite peaceful general elections and the return of the Pakistan Peoples Party to national power, General Zia-ul-Haq's imprint on society and the religious beliefs that empowered it still run deep in Pakistani institutions.

Over the years, Pakistan has witnessed the emergence of a new wave of feminist activism that has gained momentum in recent years. Since 2018, women across the country have come together on March 8th, International Women's Day, to raise their voices and demand gender equality and minority rights. They call themselves the Aurat March, which translates to Women's March, and they take to the streets in cities across the country to assert their presence and claim their rights. The Lahore chapter of the Aurat March is historical, and this documentary explores what goes into organizing this important event.

Despite progress in recent years, women in Pakistan still face discrimination and violence in their daily lives. The Aurat March provides a platform for them to raise awareness of these issues and demand change. Through interviews with organizers and participants, this film delves into the challenges women face today in Pakistan and their reasons for marching.

The Aurat March represents a powerful symbol of women's strength and resilience in adversity. Through their activism, women in Pakistan are rewriting the narrative of what it means to be a woman in their society and paving the way for a brighter, more equal future.

I have included this march in honour of her participation in the women’s rights movement in Pakistan. She texted me videos from the march, which I would have loved to include, but I can’t due to safety and security reasons. Instead, I am sharing the film she shared with me.

Roya Mahboob

Roya Mahboob is a visionary and pioneering Afghan entrepreneur who has shattered gender stereotypes and made remarkable strides in empowering women through technology. As the CEO and founder of Afghan Citadel Software Company (ACSC), located in the city of Herat, she has been an instrumental force in advancing women's rights and catalyzing change in Afghanistan and beyond.

Mahboob's unyielding dedication to advancing women's rights through technology has earned her global recognition and admiration. In 2013, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people, and on International Day of the Girl, she was celebrated as Afghanistan's first female tech CEO, a role model for the next generation of women leaders in STEM.

Through her work at ACSC and her philanthropic efforts, Mahboob has transformed countless lives, elevating women and children in Afghanistan and beyond and empowering them to seize opportunities through technology. Her commitment to empowering others through technology inspires all who seek to make a meaningful difference in their communities.

Mahboob is a fervent advocate for Bitcoin in Afghanistan and has been among the first entrepreneurs to introduce this digital currency to the country. She views Bitcoin as a means of safeguarding one's savings and investing in a brighter future. While living in New York, Mahboob often utilizes Bitcoin to remit money to her loved ones, friends, and vendors in Afghanistan. Furthermore, she intends to host a Bitcoin conference in Afghanistan through her nonprofit, the Digital Citizen Fund, where she serves as CEO and co-founder.

In addition to her work on Bitcoin, Mahboob has focused on building digital literacy and skills for women and children in developing countries, particularly in Afghanistan. At the young age of 23, she founded ACSC, where she predominantly hired female engineers and employees. The company swiftly gained recognition, securing contracts with major institutions, including U.S. and Afghan government agencies.

Mahboob is also the CEO and co-founder of the Digital Citizen Fund, a nonprofit that has enrolled over 9,000 Afghan women and girls in education programs. Through this organization, she continues to drive transformation and promote access to education and digital literacy for women.

Mahboob's intention to organize a Bitcoin conference in Afghanistan to showcase projects developed by female Afghan entrepreneurs is a testament to her unwavering dedication to promoting gender equality and financial independence for Afghan women. Through her use of Bitcoin, she has empowered several women through the Digital Citizen Fund, helping them access technology and financial independence.

Bitcoin holds immense promise in enabling women to overcome financial barriers and achieve independence, particularly in Afghanistan. For instance, Bitcoin has allowed at least 2,000 girls to be paid for their blogging and social media skills, and impoverished Afghan women have received emergency aid through Bitcoin donations when traditional banking systems have fallen short under Taliban rule. The reduced risk of confiscation and increased portability of Bitcoin donations make it a powerful tool for empowering women.

Although challenges remain in expanding Bitcoin businesses within Afghanistan due to the nature of how early it is in Bitcoin's adoption stage, Mahboob's work in advancing Bitcoin is a beacon of hope and inspiration.

On this International Women's Day, it is imperative to acknowledge Roya Mahboob's invaluable contributions to the advancement of women's rights through Bitcoin and related technologies. Her unwavering dedication to empowering women and promoting their access to education and digital literacy is genuinely admirable. Mahboob's efforts have not only broken down barriers for women in Afghanistan but have also inspired others worldwide to work towards achieving gender equality. As a pioneering female entrepreneur and philanthropist, Mahboob is a role model for all of us who aspire to impact the world positively. She is a woman worthy of remembrance and celebration on this significant occasion.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to sit down for a podcast conversation with the Secular Jihadists from the Middle East.

The four hosts of the Secular Jihadist podcasts are Armin Navabi, Faisal Saeed Al Mutar, Yasmine Mohammed and Ali A. Rizvi. They have been formidable figures at the forefront of the global Ex-Muslims community who are spearheading a worldwide change movement speaking out against what’s happening in the Islamic communities in the world.

The podcast usually appears in audio format on Soundcloud but was recorded exlusively in video format for their Youtube channel and off-schedule.

Armin Navabi is an ex-Muslim from Iran and the founder of the Atheist Republic, a Canadian registered non-profit organization with over one million fans and followers worldwide. The organization is dedicated to offering a safe community for atheists around the world to share their ideas and meet like-minded individuals.

Armin was born and raised in the Islamic Republic of Iran and was indoctrinated thoroughly in the Muslim tradition. After almost losing his life in the pursuit of “God’s grace”, the devastation of that event motivated him to seek a better understanding of the nature and concept of God and religious belief. Faisal Saeed Al Mutar is an Iraqi-born writer, satirist, public speaker, community manager, computer geek and a Human rights activist. His writings and secular western lifestyle made him a target for threats and attacks by al-Qaeda. He survived three attempted kidnappings. His brother and cousin were also killed by al-Qaeda in sectarian violence. Al Mutar visited Lebanon and then Malaysia where he founded the Global Secular Humanist Movement in September 2010 “with the mission of addressing the absence of recognition and legal protections for secular humanists.” He sought asylum in the United States of America in 2013. Yasmine is an Arab-Canadian university educator, activist, and author. She is the author of the popular blog Confessions of an ExMuslim. Born and raised in North America, she endured the same traumas that are familiar to Muslims across the planet. As a child, she was beaten for not memorizing the Quran. As a teenager, she was forced into a marriage to a member of Al Qaeda (after he was bailed out of prison by Osama bin Laden himself). And as an adult, she wore a niqab, and lived in a home/prison with paper covering all the windows. She recently published her memoir entitled: “From Al Qaeda to Atheism”. (source)

Ali A. Rizvi is a Pakistani-Canadian writer, physician, and musician who resides in Toronto. Ali grew up in Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, as part of a progressive Muslim family, before he moved permanently to Canada in his twenties. As a physician, he trained in pathology (with a fellowship in oncologic pathology) at SUNY Buffalo and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and also holds a master of science degree in biochemistry from Ontario’s McMaster University. In 2011, he switched his career to medical communications so he could focus more on his writing. Ali is an avid and vocal advocate for secularism, science, and reform, particularly in the Muslim community. I think it's very important for Muslims all over the world to understand what they are up against. These violent extremist people use important and emotional keywords from the religion, to get into the minds of people to make their pitch for the violence that they espouse. And when someone criticizes their argument, they are very quick to talk about how the critic is attacking the faith of 1.4 billion Muslims.

But you and I who live in Muslim communities or are from Muslim communities also know how this 1.4 billion Muslim number is composed of. They include members of the 73 sects in the various denominations. The numbers include Sufis, Shias, and all the others. But if you ask one of these people from the Wahhabi or Salafi ideology what they think of the other sects and denominations, they would be quick to dismiss all the Muslim's who doesn't follow their ways as Kaafir. So which Muslims are these people referring to?

This is also true whenever they are questioned about their motivations and their actions resulting from this hate speech. They wave around "islamophobia" as the motivation of the critic. When clearly we are talking about how radicalization is destroying once peaceful Muslim communities.

Like termites, they have infested peaceful and moderate Muslim communities and started to use emotional Islamic keywords in an attempt to convert people to their beliefs and are actively recruiting fighters for their cause. And they use economic hardship, poverty, lack of education to prey on their victims.

And if we let them do that, we will lose the harmony that exists in our society. They are seeking a war so they can get "martyr" doing their violent "jihad"

This video below is how these people are trying to destroy Indonesia under the same narrative. Maldives is already under attack. We can't let them do to us what they are doing in other parts of the world.

The Maldivian people must unite together to to fight religious extremists from increasing in the country. We must also never let these people get close to positions of power in the government.

If we do, we will end up like Bangladesh or worse like the Middle East. Our people can't afford to loose our moderate way of life to religious extremism. It will tear our society apart and do irrecoverable damage.

We must be vigilant. We must say no to religious extremism.

We must become a secular country so that Muslim's can be the Muslim of our own choosing and conscience rather than have it imposed on us with those who choose violence and power or civility and democracy.

Our freedom depends on it. This is only the beginning. Worse is yet to come if we do not start this public discussion now. This is a public conversation that can no longer be ignored.

This isn't about being against Islam. The Wahhabi's and Salafi's have been twisting the words of everyone whoever spoke out against them as atheists or laadheenee (irreligious). That is how they seek to operate and control the narrative. Secularism is the only way to make sure religious extremist do not come to positions of power in government.

When that fails, they choose violence. Today they hide among us. Tomorrow they seek to rule us.

An Islamic argument for Secularism by Professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im:

In his seminal work “Islam and the Secular State” that has set the debate on the nature of Political Islam around the world, Professor Abdullahi Ahmed an-Naim challenges the dangerous illusion of an Islamic state that claims the right to enforce Sharia principles through coercion. At the same time, on the opposite end of the debate, he dismisses "the dangerous illusion that Islam can, or should be kept out of the public life of the community of believers", an argument often cited by proponents of strong secularism.

For An-Na’im, the separation of Islam from the state together with the regulation of the political role of Islam through constitutionalism, and the protection of human rights are the necessary safeguards to ensure freedom and security for all to properly and sincerely practice their religions. Yet despite this separation, An-Na'im argues that Muslims are still entitled to propose a policy or legislation stemming from their religion, provided they support such proposals with what he calls civic reason - reasons that can be publicly debated and contested by any citizen, individually or collectively, in accordance with norms of civility and mutual respect.

This lecture will revisit and extend the arguments outlined in the book, and will examine how these theories could be practiced in Muslim countries.

Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes legal philosopher Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im, Candler Professor of Law at Emory University, for a discussion of the challenges facing Muslims as they seek to reconcile tradition and modernity. Professor An-Na'im reflects on his intellectual journey: the influence of his parents and of his teacher Mahmoud Mohamed Taba. He also enumerates lessons of his own career as a scholar, advocate and activist. Professor An-Na'im discusses the importance of Islamic reform which successfully negotiates universal notions of human rights, constitutionalism, and citizenship while respecting tradition and culture. His analysis focuses on the distinction between state and society: the need for separation of Islam from the state while recognizing the ways in which Islam can inform society and politics. He also points to the problematic aspects of Islamic beliefs that emerged in particular historical contexts and must adapt to modernity and the universal values that recognize the dignity of all women and men.

Tariq Ramadan and Abdullahi An-Na'im - Shari'a and Democracy in Arab Constitutions

Two of the most influential reformers from "within" Islam, Tariq Ramadan and Abdullahi An-Na'im are discussing what shari'a is and should be: a set of principles and morals for believers, never a body of law to be enforced by the State? Both wish democracy, equality amongst citizens, human rights. But they also disagree: Tariq Ramadan believes shari'a should be named in the Arab constitutions as Muslims draw principles of justice for change from within their own tradition and religion. For An- Na'im, on the contrary, the religious needs to be kept far from the political: only a secular state can guarantee the realization of the Islamic objective of justice in Muslim societies.
